Just browsing more info on the RX-8 since it’s my current favorite car again and I was looking for reviews on the Grand Touring trim. I’ve read all about the R3 but I love the calmer looks of the GT and Sport, also they are cheaper. The GT adds a number of standard features over the Sport such as leather and heated seats, sunroof, and Xenon HIDs to name a few.
Anyways back to this comparo. I’m not sure anyone would be cross shopping these two vehicles.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
What’s the strangest comparison you’ve seen?

Just find it strange they didn’t even use the Accord Coupe

I remember reading this review a while back and thought that was one heck of a curveball. Guess they realized nobody would really care about a shootout between two hybrids with the same basic design.

Fun fact: Some insurance companies and state motor vehicle departments consider the RX-8 a sedan because it has 4 doors. Thus the insurance and taxes are calculated cheaper than a sports car, especially with the low weight and relatively low power.
I’d rather have the RX-8.
(Giving the Accord 10.0s down the line is either lazy or insanely biased; as good as Accords can be, they aren’t THAT good)

I’m really considering the RX-8. The lack of big power doesn’t bother me in the least bit. With a few choice mods you can get 0-60 down into the mid-high 5 second range and that sounds good enough to me.
That insurance thing is also true. Any savings you’d have in fuel choosing the Accord would be negated due to the insurance. RX-8 is a 4 door with a “small displacement” motor. Gotta love how you can skate the system sometimes.
I do love an Accord Coupe V6 though. Just wish they came equipped with and LSD.
Also NO car is that good to get a straight 10/10. Come on now. This wasn’t even the V6 variant so they could’ve at least docked points on acceleration and power.

Yep.
The nearest CarMax to me has two RX-8s, and I had to resist test-driving both because one would inevitably come home with me, and I just bought a Mazda6 in April, so my wife would make me take it back. Especially since the next car purchase is supposed to be "hers" and probably a CX-5 Touring or Grand Touring.

Back when I was out buying a new car before I decided on the Mustang I was tryign to find Hyundai Genesis vs 370Z comparos but there wasn’t a single one on the internet. This made no sense to me. A Genesis V6 vs a 370Z seemed like an obvious comparo to make, apparently not. Everything would compare the 370Z to the Mustang GT, which the GT clearly outclassed the 370Z according to most sites, and the Hyundai to the Mustang V6 which the Hyundai was clearly superior to in the comparos. Made no sense to me.

An RX-8 with a CarMax warranty might be the best way to get an RX-8. You could out-DeMuro Doug’s Range Rover.

I actually remembered a comparison between the 370, Genesis and Mustang V6. Hold on I think I can find it.
This is the first gen Genesis by the way

Also what made you choose the Stang in the end?

forgot first gen. The current gen I couldn’t find anything though which is the one I was looking at.
Basically the 370Z much of the same faults as the Mustang except the Mustang had more power. The brakes in the Z were prone to fade and were considered rather bad, the Mustang had similar problems but they were larger so had slightly less issues. The Z was a 2 seater and the mustang could seat 4 so that came into play a bit when things were this close. The Z Sport was 33k MSRP mustang with track package was about the same amount about. In comparos despite the lack of IRS it was mostly said the Mustang handled well when compared to the Z. Basically it came down to a test drive for me and reading what people say about them on autocross forums that I posted on and ended up liking the Mustang more. Never had an American car before or a V8. It was a good choice I really like this car.
When I went to buy the car I got offered a mega deal on the Mustang, $7000 off MSRP, so I had to like the 370Z considerably more than the Mustang to choose it over the car. I probably should have seen if the Nissan dealer woudl counter-offer before buying but I did not.

Well with all things considered you got the best deal imaginable. That Nissan dealer wouldn’t have given you $7k off the price. Would have laughed you right out the door. Seemed you did your research and was well informed before making your final decision. The Z is a nice car and all but I love having a back seat for just in case purposes.
I’d love a 5.0 Stang but it’s not in budget. The RX-8s can be had for screaming deals as of now even during the summertime. Case in point, found a 2009 Grand Touring 6MT with a little over 50k miles listed for $12900. With negotiations I’m sure the price would drop further because that car is a hard sell for the uninitiated. I figure by early Fall these gems can be had closer to $10k-$11k easily.

The Series II (2009-2011) models were said to have much improved reliability. Mazda performed great wizardry in the cooling department. Also the motors are warrantied by the factory for 8yrs or 100k miles. So the warranties will expire between 2017-2019. Save the CarMax $4k mark up + warranty costs and put aside change for a new engine if need be. The motor costs $1300-$2000 rebuilt.
In the end you’ll still save money not going the CarMax route.

Your math has foiled my plans!
Funnily enough, I might be in the market for an RX-8 as a daily driver (because I’m an automotive masochist)...between 2017 and 2019, when my Mazda3 will likely be nearing the end of its life. Hopefully depreciation will balance out the warranties expiring.

This’ll be my 7th car. Seem to get another annually. But this time around I’d plan on keeping it long term.
A big complaint about the car is gas mileage that at best on the highway you may graze 24mpg. It’s a trade off for the performance you get. Additionally you’ll have the gas money because of how cheap the purchase price is and how low insurance costs are. It’s technically a 4-door, 4 seater car with a tiny 1.3L engine.

Should have gotten the RX-8 while you had the chance. Actually......once she gets her CX-5 her vehicle can play sedan duties. You can trade the 6 in and possibly break even or even leave with money in your pocket.
Man we enthusiasts are evil to each other’s finances.

Were the factory warranties transferrable? I thought they were only 3-year/36K.
My neatest CarMax is actually next-door to a Mazda dealership, so service would be a wash, except for potential deductibles.

Well her own 6 sedan (yeah, we have his & her cars now, not really intentionally) would be traded in against the CX-5 (or CX-3, possibly), but that’s years away (knock on wood), just as mine will eventually be traded in on a similar small crossover or taller wagon (like a V60 XC, not an XC60).

Yes that was the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. The rest of the car is stout, it’s the rotary you have to worry about and that’s what the 8-year/100k warranty applies too. That’s what makes getting one such a nice proposition if you’re able to get one and blow the engine before the warranty is up.
